Everyone loves pancakes…don’t they? They are so versatile and can be eaten as a savoury filler or sweet treat. Rather than cook up a batch at home or wait until Pancake day, head outdoors and have pancakes at the playground! The kids, and adults, can burn off some energy before tucking in to a tasty tea. It’s relaxing being in the outdoors so make the meal a relaxing affair too. Get the whole family involved, chopping ingredients, mixing the batter and of course flipping the pancakes! Pancakes are quick to cook but it takes time to cook enough for the whole family so be patient; take in turns to cook the pancakes while others eat or even head off into the playground to play a bit more.
A top tip would be to make the batter in advance and bring it along in a flask, ready to pour into the pan. Alternatively, take the ingredients and mix up the batter on location. Bring along a range of fillings; a selection of savoury and sweet ingredients that will please the differing tastes of different family members.
>Here are the ingredients that we used but you can of course be as creative as you wish.
Pancake Ingredients:
Batter
400g plain flour
500ml milk
4 eggs
pinch of salt
oil (for frying)
Method:
Place the flour into a container and hollow out a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and mix with the flour. Gradually add milk to the mixture, mixing thoroughly to avoid lumpy bits! Add a splash of oil to a frying pan and warm. Pour a generous ladle full of batter into the pan and encourage the mixture to spread around. Allow the batter to cook before easing the sides of the pancake away from the pan. Once the pancake has started to brown on one side, flip it over either using a spatula or by flipping it. Once cooked, add your choice of ingredients.
